It was His way of saying ‘Happy to Help’

When Zacchaeus climbed the sycamore tree in the Gospel of Luke, he was not up there because he had a need.

He just wanted to see Jesus.

As a tax collector building his wealth through corrupt means, Zacchaeus was despised as a traitor and a sinner in the Jewish community.

And, if Jesus did not volunteer to help Zacchaeus would probably continue his life of ignorance and sin.

Fortunately, Jesus decided that it was the last day Zacchaeus was going to continue being called a man of ill repute.  Jesus invited himself to Zacchaeus’ house, despite the threat from the angry, judgemental crowd.

That day Zacchaeus’ life was transformed.

When the woman caught in adultery was brought to Jesus, as mentioned in the Gospel of John, it seemed like she would face a cruel death at the hands of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law until Jesus calmly and wisely drove the accusing men away.

He then, took the opportunity to motivate the woman for better living.

He broke the ice with a question “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” .

Then, he  told her that the issue of past life and mistakes was over so long as she does not go back to that life again.

That day, the woman grabbed hold of new life.

In John chapter 5, a lame, paralyzed man was lying on a mat at the pool of Bethesda, stuck in a miserable state of living for 38 years – the man did not even notice Jesus standing there. Jesus initiates a conversation with a question – do you want to be made well? The man then rattled off a trail of complaints – he had no one to rely on, no friend to help and no luck. Then Jesus gave him His Word.

That day, the man’s life instantly got better after years of suffering.

All the above stories are about folks who were at the peak of an uncertain future, hated, judged, broken, full of sin, facing certain death, stressed, helpless, powerless, given up until Jesus disrupted their impoverished fate and hardship by personally volunteering to help.

It was His way of telling them “Looking for something? Happy to Help!”.
