A daily dose of God’s touch in a minute…
The gospel of Mathew starts with the genealogy (line of ancestors) of Jesus.
Verse 18 explains how the birth of Jesus came about. Mary, pledged to be married to Joseph was pregnant before she had any intimacy with Joseph. Joseph knew what a controversy it would be, if the community came to know so he decided to be silent about the thing.
Joseph; probably baffled, as many would, in the midst of a shocking situation, was now convinced to go ahead with a separation, that’s when an angel of the Lord appeared in his dream telling him not to leave Mary and not to be afraid. The angel also told him that the whole thing that was bothering him is the plan of God orchestrated by the Holy Spirit and that the young girl is sinless. The angel explained to Joseph that Mary is going to supernaturally give birth to a child who will save the people from their sins and therefore he is to be named ‘Jesus’
It linked to the prophesy given by a prophet (Isaiah- about 700 years before) saying “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”) simply put; God himself will dwell with mankind right on earth.
As per the angel’s command, after Joseph woke up, he took Mary home as his wife, but did not have any physical contact with her until Jesus was born.
What can we learn from this chapter?
The birth of Jesus is a wonderful thing that happened to mankind but the beginning of it was not as wonderful as the end result. Mary soon to marry Joseph, was already pregnant. It was a shocking situation to Joseph, who had to deal with something unexpected.
Can confusion and unexpected changes happen even now?
Many times situations can be confusing, painful or shameful in ways that it is difficult to believe that God is even involved. People may pity you. You may pity yourself. Some may even want to break away from you in that situation.
Don’t panic! Stay calm. Breathe in. Breathe out. Read the Bible. Watch a movie. Enjoy a cup of coffee as you spend time with God. And, when you hold on to God, like in Joseph’s case, God himself will turn the situation around in such a way that everyone including yourself will see a wonderful result and be amazed.
Trust in God. He will do a great thing in your life and through your life. Jesus, the savior has arrived.
Have a great day!
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
